Our System 41 roller midge screen for single doors uses a genuine 20×30 thread weave — the only mesh count that reliably stops Highland midges and fine biting insects in rural and coastal areas. Custom made to your exact measurements in our UK factory. The cassette mounts to one side of the door frame; pull the screen across and it seals magnetically on the opposite side.
Finally — no more midges through the doorWe've had midge screens on our windows for years but always left the back door open regardless. Put one on the door this summer and it's transformed evenings in the kitchen. Genuine 20×30 mesh makes a real difference.
Excellent quality — does exactly what it saysEasy to order and arrived well packaged. Fits perfectly and the quality is excellent. We're in the Highlands and this is the only mesh that actually keeps the midges out. Highly recommend.
Works brilliantly in a midge-prone areaWe're on the west coast of Scotland and midges are a serious problem from June through September. This screen has made a real difference to being able to use the back door in the evenings. Very pleased with the quality.
Ordered for windows and doors — all perfectOrdered midge screens for two windows and the back door. All fit perfectly and the quality is exactly what I expected. Simple to install and makes a huge difference through midge season.
Standard fly screen mesh lets midges through — the 18×16 weave is simply too open for Culicoides impunctatus, the Highland midge. Our 20×30 mesh has 20 threads per inch horizontally and 30 vertically, creating apertures small enough to stop midges reliably while still allowing fresh air to flow through the door. The same System 41 cassette — mounted to the side of the door frame, pulling across the opening. Select your mesh below.
If you're dealing with Highland midges or biting insects in rural or coastal areas, our 20×30 midge mesh is the most effective barrier. All four mesh types use the identical System 41 cassette and door frame profiles. Just select below.
Most customers fit their roller midge screen in around 20 minutes. Here's how it works.

Need midge protection for French doors or windows as well? The same 20×30 midge mesh is available across the full System 41 range. Note: screw fix only — no-drill is not available with midge mesh.
Stop midges getting through the door. Open it all summer.
If you live in Scotland, the Highlands, a coastal or rural area, or anywhere midges are a seasonal problem, a standard fly screen on your door simply isn't enough. Midges — specifically Culicoides impunctatus, the Highland midge — are far smaller than common flies and pass straight through a standard 18×16 mesh. Our roller midge screen for single doors uses a 20×30 thread/inch weave: the tightest standard mesh we offer, purpose-built to stop midges while still allowing fresh air to circulate through the open door.
A standard fly screen mesh has 18 threads per inch horizontally and 16 vertically — sufficient for flies, wasps and common UK insects, but midges are considerably smaller. Our 20×30 midge mesh has 20 threads horizontally and 30 vertically, creating apertures small enough to stop midges reliably. The finer weave reduces airflow and light transmission slightly compared to standard mesh — but for anyone dealing with midge season, that's a trade-off worth making.
Fine mesh alone isn't the full answer. Midges will find any gap around the edges of a poorly fitted screen. Our System 41 door screen addresses this with integral brushpile strips running along the top and bottom guides. When the screen is deployed, these brushes press against the mesh and frame, creating a continuous seal along both horizontal edges. The magnetic side profile seals the leading edge on the side opposite the cassette. Every screen is custom made to your exact measurements, so there are no gaps at the top, bottom or closing edge where midges could enter.
The cassette mounts vertically to one side of the door frame. The screen pulls horizontally across the opening and seats magnetically into the side profile on the opposite side. To retract, pull the handle back — the spring-loaded cassette draws the mesh in with a smooth, braked return. When the door is closed, the screen sits fully retracted and protected inside the cassette.
The System 41 single door screen is suitable for both inward and outward opening doors. The system was originally designed for European use, where doors typically open inward — and in those cases the screen is mounted externally. For outward opening doors, the screen is mounted internally instead.
Whether to recess fix or face fix depends on the door frame. If there is sufficient depth within the reveal to accommodate the cassette, recess fixing is the cleaner option. If not, the cassette and magnetic side profile can be face fixed to the door frame surround. One important consideration when face fixing: the cassette and magnetic side profile should be positioned directly around the opening — we'd recommend not allowing any additional overlap — otherwise the handle cannot clear the fixing surface. If you're unsure how to measure for face fixing, contact us before ordering.
The no-drill fixing option is not available with midge mesh — screw fix is required for all midge screen configurations. This is because the expanded end-cap mechanism used in no-drill screens is designed for the lighter standard mesh only.
The single door System 41 screen is available with all four mesh options — standard insect, midge (20×30 weave), pet-resistant heavy-gauge, and pollen-filtering — all using the identical cassette and door profiles. Browse the other mesh types at:

Roller Midge Screen for Single Door and Child Safety
Child Safe By Design - Handle on Sliding Bar: Roller Midge Screen for Single Door can be operated using discrete handle on the sliding bar. We call this ‘child safe by design’ as there are no looped cords or chains to operate the blind.
About Child Safety
At newblinds.co.uk, child safety is of paramount importance. If left hanging freely, chains and cords from blinds can pose a direct threat to children. For this reason, we are working towards all of our products being cord-less or chain-free and therefore “safe by design”.
Where it is not yet feasible to supply a product that is “safe by design”, we ensure that the product is fully compliant with Child Safety legislation. Not only do we ensure that, where necessary, our products are supplied/fitted with child safety cleats/devices, but we also supply, free of charge, these items to our previous customers.
