As standard, this roller blind is operated using a looped operating chain*. You can select whether you wish for this chain to be positioned on the left or on the right hand side of the blind. The chain is silver metal and will be supplied with a 'child safety' p-clip that should be fastened to the recess/wall, in order to hold the chain under tension and out of harms way.
Alternatively, you can select our bluetooth motorisation upgrade. If the bluetooth motor is selected, the blind is operated from any Apple iOS or Google Android smartphone using an easy-to-use mobile app. The motor incorporates an in-built lithium-ion rechargeable battery and comes with a 4 metre long USB-C charge cable, that plugs into the head of the motor to recharge the in-built battery. The battery lasts approximately 3-6 months between charges. This may depend on blind size and frequency of use.
*Please note: Beds, cots, or other items of furniture should not be positioned next to operating chains so that the chains remain out of reach.
Yes, these blinds are child safe. In line with child safety regulation - if you select chain operation, the chain will be supplied with a child-safey p-clip, which should be screw fixed into the recess or wall to hold the chain taut and out of harm's way.
If you select our low-cost upgrade to motorised operation, the blind will be completely chain-free and child-safe.
Please note: You should always follow the manufacturers instructions when installing blinds paying attention to specific guidance for child safe installation. Beds, cots, or other items of furniture should never be positioned next to operating chains so that the chains remain out of reach.

As standard, this roller blind has a straight bottom finish and a concealed hem bar. This means that a weighted hem bar will be concealed in a stitched pocket at the bottom of the blind. See image below.
We also offer the option to upgrade to the following premium aluminium hem bars:
✔ Rectangular - White, black, anthracite - 1cm deep x 4cm tall
✔ Oval - White, black, anthracite - 1.5cm deep x 2.5cm tall
Yes, you can choose to have a pelmet at the top of the blind. This is a great optional finishing touch to your roller blind if you prefer not to be able to see the roller blind's brackets, mechanism and roller tube.
If the pelmet is ordered, the blind comes pre-installed within the pelmet unit. You will receive L-shaped brackets which are screw-fixed into the top of the recess or face fixed to the wall outside of the recess. Once the brackets are installed, the pelmet simply snaps into these brackets. The pelmet unit is made of powder coated aluminium in white and is 8.5cm deep and 8.5cm tall. It runs the full width of the blind and the front of the pelmet is trimmed with a strip of the fabric matching the blind.
For roller blinds with pelmet, there is also a choice of distinctive rectangular or oval aluminium hem bars in white, anthracite or black.
You can see images of the roller blind with and without pelmet below.
If you are unsure about your fabric choice, then we'd recommend taking advantage of our free of charge fabric sampling service. Simply click the 'order free sample' button on the fabric page and the sample will be added to the basket. You can add as many different fabric samples to your basket as you wish. Complete your fabric sample order by heading to the checkout and entering your delivery details and your samples will be with your within 1-2 working days.
We encourage you to order free fabric samples so that you can touch and feel the fabric that you are considering ordering for your blind. You can hold it up against the window to see it in situ or against existing decor to see how it contrasts or complements your existing colour scheme. If you are planning a redecoration or renovation, you can even add the fabric sample to a mood board to build your room's colour palette.
You can install roller blinds inside of the recess or outside of the recess. Which is best for you really depends on your situation. We'll outline below what are the benefits of each.
Inside of the recess:
✓ Neat: Installation inside of the recess looks neater as you are using the space allowed by the recess to contain the roller blind.
✓ Easier: Measuring for inside of recess installation is easier and there are no tricky add ons to think about. If you select "recess size" we'll make any deductions for you
✓ Additional window coverings: Installing your roller blind inside of the recess gives you the flexibility to add an additional window covering outside of the recess, such as a curtain. This not only looks great, but can give flexibility. For example, you may choose a privacy roller blind or voile fabric for your roller blind allowing some natural light in - but then install a blackout curtain outside of the recess that can be drawn accross when you are looking to darken the room. You may also double up a blackout curtain with a blackout roller blind - to maximise the amount of light exclusion.
Outside of the recess:
✓ Window Coverage: Installing your blinds outside of the recess allows you to ensure that the fabric overlaps the window opening to give total coverage. This can be particularly helpful when you wish to acheive a high degree of light exclusion.
✓ Sill Space: Installing your roller blinds outside of the recess will keep your window sills clear for whatever you might like to use them for - plants, flowers, ornaments... pets!
✓ Shallow Recesses: If your recess is shallow, then you may need to install the blind outside of the recess.
You can select to have your fabric rolling off the window side or room side of the roller blind tube:
- Window Side of Roller Tube (Standard Roll): This is often called 'standard roll' and means the fabric will roll off the side of the roller tube that is closest to the window. This can be slightly better for light exclusion.
- Room Side of Roller Tube (Reverse Roll): This is often called 'reverse roll' and means the fabric will roll off the room-side of the roller tube. This is useful if you have a shallow recess with window or door handles that may clash with the blind fabric when the blind is being raised or lowered.
You can see the difference in appearance between standard and reverse roll below.
As standard, this blind is operated using a looped chain in silver metal. There is also the option to upgrade to motorised operation using a Shadeflow Bluetooth motor. Here are the key things to understand about this motorised roller blind:
✔ Smartphone control: Because the motor is bluetooth enabled, it can be controlled directly from any Apple iOS or Google Android smart phone using the Shadeflow app. No handset or home hub is required.
✔ Battery powered: The motor is powered by an in-built rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The battery can be charged using a USB-C charge cable is included with the blind. Charge time is approximately 2-3 hours. The blind will operate for between 3-6 months between charges depending on frequency of use and size of blind.
✔ Wire-free installation: Because the blind is battery powered, no mains power or cabling needs to be installed for the blinds.
✔ Instant set up: We programme the top and bottom limits of the motor in our factory. All you will need to do to take control of your blind is download the app, switch on the motor and scan the QR code that is sent with the blind.
As standard, this product is operated with a continuous loop of chain (in metal) which is secured to the wall/fixing surface with a child safety anchor. To comply with child safety legislation, the chain will be manufactured at 1 metre in length. Child safety devices have been fully tested in compliance with British safety standard EN13120. You will find details of how to install the devices in the installation instructions. Please contact our friendly customer service team if you need any further advice. Please note that beds, cots and other items of furniture should not be positioned next to operating chain, so that the chain remains out of reach of small children.
As an optional extra, you can upgrade your blind so that it is operated using an integrated Bluetooth-enabled motor. The motor is powered using an in-built rechargeable battery. The motor is Bluetooth-enabled, which means it can be operated using an app on an Android or iOS phone or by using a simple radio handset. We call this ‘Child Safe by Design’ as there are no looped cords or chains required to operate the blind.
At newblinds.co.uk, child safety is of paramount importance. If left hanging freely, chains and cords from blinds can pose a direct threat to children. For this reason, we are working towards all of our products being cordless or chain-free and therefore “safe by design”. Where it is not yet feasible to supply a product that is “safe by design”, we ensure that the product is fully compliant with Child Safety legislation.
