As standard, this roller blind is operated using a looped operating chain*. You can select whether you wish for this chain to be positioned on the left or on the right hand side of the blind. The chain is white plastic and will be fitted with 'child safety' breakers that allow the chain to snap apart if it is placed under load. If the chain does snap apart, it can be easily reconnected.
Alternatively, you can select our low-cost motorisation upgrade. If motorised operation is selected, the blind is operated using an easy-to-use 5-channel handset. Each channel on the handset can control one or more blind simultaneously. The motor incorporates an in-built lithium-ion rechargeable battery. You can also choose to order a charger, that plugs into the head of the motor to recharge the in-built battery. The battery lasts approximately 3-6 months between charges. This may depend on blind size and frequency of use.
*Please note: Beds, cots, or other items of furniture should not be positioned next to operating chains so that the chains remain out of reach.
Yes, these blinds are child safe. In line with child safety regulation - if you select chain operation, the chain will be fitted with two 'child-safety' connectors. If any load is placed on the loop of the chain, the chain will break apart. The chain can easily be re-connected.
If you select our low-cost upgrade to motorised operation, the blind will be completely chain-free and child-safe.
Please note: You should always follow the manufacturers instructions when installing blinds paying attention to specific guidance for child safe installation. Beds, cots, or other items of furniture should never be positioned next to operating chains so that the chains remain out of reach.

You can install roller blinds inside of the recess or outside of the recess. Which is best for you really depends on your situation. We'll outline below what are the benefits of each.
Inside of the recess:
✓ Neat: Installation inside of the recess looks neater as you are using the space allowed by the recess to contain the roller blind.
✓ Easier: Measuring for inside of recess installation is easier and there are no tricky add ons to think about. If you select "recess size" we'll make any deductions for you
✓ Additional window coverings: Installing your roller blind inside of the recess gives you the flexibility to add an additional window covering outside of the recess, such as a curtain. This not only looks great, but can give flexibility. For example, you may choose a privacy roller blind or voile fabric for your roller blind allowing some natural light in - but then install a blackout curtain outside of the recess that can be drawn accross when you are looking to darken the room. You may also double up a blackout curtain with a blackout roller blind - to maximise the amount of light exclusion.
Outside of the recess:
✓ Window Coverage: Installing your blinds outside of the recess allows you to ensure that the fabric overlaps the window opening to give total coverage. This can be particularly helpful when you wish to acheive a high degree of light exclusion.
✓ Sill Space: Installing your roller blinds outside of the recess will keep your window sills clear for whatever you might like to use them for - plants, flowers, ornaments... pets!
✓ Shallow Recesses: If your recess is shallow, then you may need to install the blind outside of the recess.
On this roller blind, the fabric rolls off the window side of the roller blind tube.
We have an alternative collection of roller blinds where it is possible to personalise the blind so that the fabric rolls off the room side of the tube.
As standard, this blind is operated using a looped chain. There is also the option to upgrade to motorised operation using a Shadeflow radio operated motor. Here are the key things to understand about this motorised roller blind:
✔ Handset control: The motor is operated using a handset, which can be ordered with the blind. The handset has 5 channels. Each channel can control one or multiple blinds simultaneously.
✔ Battery powered: The motor is powered by an in-built rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The battery can be charged using a mains charger which can be ordered with the blind. Charge time is approximately 3 hours. The blind will operate for between 3-6 months between charges depending on frequency of use and size of blind.
✔ Wire-free installation: Because the blind is battery powered, no mains power or cabling needs to be installed for the blinds.
✔ Zero set up: We programme the top and bottom limits of the motor in our factory. If you have ordered a handset, then the handset will be paired with the blind. All you will need to do is install the blind and swictch on the motor and you will be able to control your blind.
As standard, this product is operated with a loop of chain (in white plastic) which will be fitted with two child safety connectors. These connectors allow the chain to break apart when placed under load. If the chain does break apart, the child safety connectors allow the chain to be easily joined back together. To comply with child safety legislation, the chain will be manufactured at 1 metre in length. Child safety devices have been fully tested in compliance with British safety standard EN13120. You will find details of how to install the devices in the installation instructions. Please contact our friendly customer service team if you need any further advice. Please note that beds, cots and other items of furniture should not be positioned next to operating chain, so that the chain remains out of reach of small children.
As an optional extra, you can upgrade your blind so that it is operated using an integrated motor. The motor is powered using an integrated rechargeable battery and operated using a simple radio handset. We call this ‘Child Safe by design’ as there are no looped cords or chains required to operate the blind.
At newblinds.co.uk, child safety is of paramount importance. If left hanging freely, chains and cords from blinds can pose a direct threat to children. For this reason, we are working towards all of our products being cord-less or chain-free and therefore “safe by design”. Where it is not yet feasible to supply a product that is “safe by design”, we ensure that the product is fully compliant with Child Safety legislation.
