Sliding Door Blinds

Choosing sliding door blinds can be tricky because it is often not possible to install smaller blinds directly to the sliding panels. Instead, you can select blinds that either fit within the recess or outside of the recess. Because sliding doors are often quite large, it's a good idea to select a blind type which is available in extra-large sizes.

Sliding doors are usually fitted within large floor-to-ceiling openings and have multiple panels. To open the door, one or more of the panels will slide over the others. In the home, they are a fabulous way of giving access to gardens or terraces. They let in a great deal of natural light, allow a view of the outdoor space and make the room feel much bigger.

We have a full range of blinds for sliding doors below including vertical blinds which offer excellent privacy and glare control which can be varied by rotating the louvres. When fully opened, the louvres stack to one side of the recess. Extra-wide roller blinds are also a popular choice as when not required, they roll up to the top of the window out of the way. When deployed, they offer a clean aesthetic. For added convenience, they can be automated with an electric motor, which also removes the need for hanging chains. A different alternative is a panel blind, which we would recommend should be installed outside of the recess so that the panels slide and stack neatly past the opening and do not block any of the glass.

With all of our sliding door blinds, you can choose from opaque privacy or blackout fabrics.  We also offer voile and screen fabrics which allow a slight view out, still letting in some diffused natural sunlight.  Our blinds are custom made and we offer free samples of all fabrics by post! Cellular Dimout

Energy Efficient and with no visible holes for the lifting cords. Cellular (a.k.a Honeycomb or Duette fabrics) are fast overtaking single pleat fabrics as the most popular choice for pleated blinds. Cellular fabrics consist of double-layered cells of fabric that act as an insulating cushion between the inside of your home or conservatory and the outside world - keeping the heat in during the winter months and keeping your property cool in summer! Lifting cords run through the middle of the honeycomb structure, meaning there are no visible holes in the surface of the fabric. All fabrics are a uniform white in colour on the exterior face and coloured on the inside face. Translucent fabrics allow a soft diffused light in whilst maintaining privacy and controlling glare and heat!

Cellular Blackout

Energy Saving, Blackout and with no visible holes for the lifting cords! Cellular Blackout fabrics (a.k.a Honeycomb or Duette Blackout) consist of double-layered cells of fabric that act as an insulating cushion between the inside of your home or conservatory and the outside world. Our cellular blackout range also incorporate a reflective foil layer inside of the cell, which further enhances insulation - reducing your energy spend on heating and cooling and potentially saving you money! All fabrics are a uniform white in colour on the exterior face, and coloured on the inside face. Lifting cords run through the middle of the honeycomb structure, meaning there are no visible holes or light ingress through the surface of the fabric. Whist the fabric itself is blackout, you may see light ingress around the edges of your blind.

Frequently Asked Questions about Sliding Door Blinds

What blind is best for a sliding door?

Given that they open in the same direction as sliding doors, vertical blinds are a typical choice for sliding doors. In addition to drawing and stacking to the side, the vertical louvres can also be tilted to allow varying amounts of natural light into the room or control glare. This is an excellent solution for a large sliding door which you may not wish to cover with a single piece of fabric like a roller or pleated blind. Vertical blinds for sliding doors are great for covering larger spans of glass cost-effectively. They are long-lasting and simple to clean and operate. Although commonly perceived as ‘office blinds’, vertical louvre blinds have evolved a great deal in recent years to incorporate decorative fabrics in contemporary and traditional prints, bold and subtle plain colours and stylish accessories such as stylish wide-bodied vogue headrails. Fabrics are available with different degrees of light control depending on the purpose of the room ranging from light filtering to privacy and also blackout. Some fabrics also have thermal reflective coatings to offer added insulation which helps control temperatures in winter and in summer. For ease of operation, they can also be tilted and drawn with a mains-powered motor, operated from a handset or smart home system.

What is the best blind for a glass sliding door?

For glass sliding doors, roller blinds are often said to be the best solution because of how discrete and stylish they are. When required to provide light exclusion, glare control or privacy, roller blinds can be lightweight and adjustable they can be lowered. When not required they can be simply rolled up out of the way.  If you are considering roller blinds for a new build, then consider building a pocket above the sliding door recess into which the roller blind can be installed. This way, when the roller blind is rolled up, it completely disappears into the top of the recess. Roller blinds can be positioned at various heights to let light in or control glare without completely blockout out natural light or the outside world. They can even be motorised for ultimate control.

Is it better to have horizontal or vertical shades on sliding doors?

For wide sliding doors that are challenging to cover with ordinary window treatments, the most practical window covering is vertical blinds. They are capable of covering extremely wide spans and can stack at the side of the fixed door panel, so as not to obstruct access. As well as being fully open or closed, the louvres of vertical blinds for sliding doors can also be angled to either exclude the view through as well as light and glare, or they can be angled for precision control of light and privacy. Vertical blinds work particularly well on any wide-span window or door. Horizontal blinds such as aluminium Venetian blinds and wooden blinds, do not easily cover such wide spans and of course, need to be lifted to allow access to the door itself, stacking at the top. The depth of the stack can depend on the thickness of the slat used (wooden or aluminium) and also the total door height. This blind stack can be obtrusive.

Can you put roller blinds on a sliding door?

Roller blinds can be a fantastic option for sliding door blinds. Although they move vertically, the opposite of a sliding door, they can be rolled up off the door for simple access and a sleek appearance with unhindered views. It may be possible to ‘hide’ the mechanism of a roller blind, depending on what stage of your build or refurbishment you are at, by creating a pocket above the recess of the sliding door. Depending on the width of the sliding door, you may wish or need to install multiple roller blinds. A common approach is to break the sliding door span up according to the glass panels, for example, each blind may cover a single panel or two panels. Roller blinds offer different levels of light control and privacy depending on the fabric choice. A range of decorative and plain fabrics are also available to suit your taste and decor.

What are perfect-fit door blinds?

Perfect fit door Blinds are a type of blind that is designed to fit snugly into the frame of your door. They are a good option for doors that do not have the traditional recess for blinds or for those who want to avoid drilling or screwing into their walls. Perfect fit blinds are mounted on clever brackets which slide under the beading of your window or door, without need for drilling or screwing.

What options do I have for sliding door blinds at New Blinds?

At New Blinds, we offer a range of options to enhance privacy and manage the amount of light entering your room through sliding doors. One of the most popular options is the motorised pleated blinds. These blinds not only add an elegant touch to your decor but are easy to operate with a remote control. Additionally, they are excellent for energy efficiency and have fabric that can either block or filter sunlight effectively.

Are wide vertical blinds suitable for sliding doors?

Yes, wide vertical blinds can be a good option for sliding doors. They are made up of individual slats that can be adjusted to let in different amounts of light. This makes them a good choice for sliding doors, which can let in a lot of light. You can also adjust the slats to create different levels of privacy.
