A roman blind is a single panel of lined fabric that gathers into deep, even horizontal folds as it rises, and hangs flat when lowered. It gives a window the softness of a curtain while taking up far less space, and because the folds stack at the top when raised, it leaves most of the glass clear.
Only if it's wider than the fabric roll. Every fabric is woven to a set width, which you'll find in the specification tab on each product page. Order a blind narrower than that and it's made from a single piece with no joins at all. Order one wider and the fabric has to be joined to make up the width — in which case we add a symmetrical seam at each side rather than a single off-centre join, so the finished blind still looks balanced, and we pattern match across the seams wherever the design allows.
The lining stops light through the fabric, but because a roman blind hangs in front of the window some light will pass around the edges. Fitting outside the recess with a generous overlap gets you as close to full darkness as this style of blind allows.
Yes. Our thermal blackout lining insulates and blocks light in one. Thermal and blackout linings are manufactured the same way — blackout is the thermal lining with an extra pass of coating — so choosing thermal blackout gives you the insulation of a thermal lining together with full light-blocking through the fabric. It slows heat loss through the glass in winter and reduces solar gain in summer. If you'd rather daylight still came through the blind when it's lowered, choose standard lining instead.
4.5cm is the minimum depth for fitting inside the recess, for both screw fix and no-drill. If your recess is shallower, choose screw fix and face fix the blind to the wall above the window instead.
Yes, and we'd encourage it. Samples are free and posted out quickly. Colour reads very differently in a north-facing room than a south-facing one, and no screen can show you texture or how a fabric handles light.
Yes. A motor fits inside the headrail and runs from a rechargeable battery pack that tucks behind it out of sight. There's no wiring and no electrician — the blind installs exactly like a manual one. Operate it from a handset, or add the smart controller for app control, sunrise and sunset schedules and voice control. A charge lasts up to six months.
Yes. Our no-drill option holds the blind inside the window recess with tension brackets, so nothing is screwed into your walls, tiles or window frames, and it lifts out cleanly leaving no holes. It's a popular choice for rented homes and new-build windows still under warranty. Both sides of the recess need to be solid and square for the brackets to grip.
Every chain-operated blind we supply meets BS EN 13120. The chain comes at 1 metre with a P-clip anchor that fixes to the wall and holds it taut and out of reach, and the lifting cords run through break-away clips that release under load. Fitting the P-clip isn't optional — it's what makes the blind safe. If you have young children, motorisation removes the chain from the window altogether, which is the safest arrangement of all.
Yes. Each window in the bay takes its own blind, measured individually, since bays are rarely perfectly symmetrical. Tell us when you order and our production team will match the pattern across the blinds as closely as the fabric allows. Keeping the chains on matching sides looks tidier than alternating them.
A roller blind is the simpler and more compact option: it rolls onto a tube, takes up very little space, and wipes clean. A roman blind is a softer, more tailored look with real fabric folds, and it holds more heat because of the lining. For a bathroom or a small utility window, a roller usually makes more sense. For a bedroom or living room where the window is part of the decoration, a roman is the better-looking choice.
Yes, particularly with a thermal blackout lining. A lined blind creates a pocket of still air against the glass, which slows heat escaping in winter and reduces solar gain in summer. The effect is greatest on single-glazed and north-facing windows, and when the blind is fitted to overlap the opening rather than sitting inside the recess.
The folds stack at the top of the blind, so a raised roman blind covers the upper portion of the window. The taller the blind, the deeper that stack. If you want the maximum light and view, fitting outside the recess lets you raise the blind clear of the glass altogether.
Bedrooms and living rooms, most often. They suit rooms where you want a window to feel dressed rather than merely covered, and they layer well under full-length curtains. They're less suited to windows you open and close constantly, or to anywhere the fabric would regularly get wet.
Every blind is made to order at the measurements you give us, so it can't be returned or exchanged if those measurements turn out to be wrong. This doesn't affect your statutory rights if an item arrives faulty or isn't as described.
