Frequently Asked Questions about Vertical Blinds

Are vertical blinds a good idea?

Yes, vertical blinds are a good idea. They offer flexible control of light, glare and privacy because their louvres can be rotated 180 degrees, from fully closed to fully closed, and every position in between. By angling the louvres, you can filter out unwanted light and glare, whilst keeping your privacy intact. They are an excellent solution for extra large windows or doors - such as bi-fold or sliding doors, where other blind types may be restricted in size. When you wish to have an uninterrupted view or full access to a window or door, vertical blinds stack neatly to one side or part in the middle to stack on either side. They are available in a vast range of fabric designs from plains to prints, and translucency levels ranging from light filtering voiles to opaque blackout fabrics.

How long do vertical blinds last?

Vertical blinds are built to last, and generally outlive any manufacturer's warranty. We have customers who have returned to us after 10, 15 or even 20 years to refresh their blinds. Even with daily openings, closings, and adjustments, they stand up very well to wear and tear and don't require particularly sensitive handling. Nonetheless, their longevity will be diminished if they are treated roughly or installed in an environment or application which leaves them exposed to the elements.

How often should vertical blinds be replaced?

If treated with care, vertical blinds can last many years with minimal wear and tear. In order to maintain the highest level of function and usability, we advise updating them every 6-8 years. However, depending on your design choice, you may find that fashions and styles change 2 years or so, and thanks to their relatively cost-effective nature, refreshing either the full blind or the louvres only is a great way to freshen up the decor of your room relatively inexpensively.

What causes vertical blinds not to open?

Common issues that may be preventing your vertical blind louvres from tilting open include the stabalising chain of one louvre being snagged on the adjacent louvre. Or the tilt rod that is connected to the rotating louvre hooks may have become disconnected from the chain or wand mechanism. Or one of more of the hooks within the louvre trucks in the headrail may have failed. If you are having trouble fully drawing open the blind, then possibly the cord within the headrail may have snapped or become detached from the leading louvre carriage. If your blind is automated, then check that power is being supplied to the motor and consider contacting the installer of the blind

Do vertical blinds let in more light?

As a comparison, between a vertical blind and a roller blind, both use the same fabric - a vertical blind will let in more light. This is simply because a roller blind is made up of a single piece of fabric, which will only allow light around the edges, whereas a vertical blind is made up of many individual fabric louvres. There will be light bleed between the louvres and of course around the edges of the blind. This can be seen as an advantage or a disadvantage depending on the application. For bedrooms and environments where light exclusion is important, then vertical blinds may not be suitable unless they are supplemented with an additional window dressing such as a curtain or roman blind. For living areas, where light control is the objective, rather than light exclusion, vertical blinds are an ideal solution. The slats can be tilted to an angle that controls glare or provides privacy, but still lets in natural light and allows a degree of view out. To let in as much natural light and feel closer to the outdoors, simply draw back the blinds. However, by merely angling the louvres, you can easily strike a balance between the two competing needs for light and privacy. Vertical blinds look great on windows and even better on bi-fold doors.

Are vertical blinds energy efficient?

Having a vertical blind at a window is more energy efficient than not having a blind at the window. Any blind will create an extra layer of insulation which reduces the amount of heat that escapes in winter months and reduces heat gain in summer months. The level of energy efficiency from this perspective of course depends on the fabric choice. Some fabric manufacturers provide energy performance data, which will help you find the most efficient fabric. Those with solar reflective or pearlescent rear coatings are known to be energy efficient.

Are vertical blinds easier to clean?

By comparison with Venetian blinds and wooden blinds, Vertical blinds, with their long vertical slats are among the most convenient to maintain. Venetian and wooden blinds have horizontal slats on which dust and debris can gather. The vertical orientation of the vertical blind louvres means that they do not catch dust, meaning they generally require less cleaning. Within the fabric range available for vertical blinds, there are a number of fabrics which are easier to clean in case of spillages or splashes, such as those made from PVC and/or glass fibre which can simply be wiped clean. We would advise consulting the fabric manufacturer's cleaning instructions for the best advice on cleaning.

Why do vertical blinds break so easily?

Actually, vertical blinds are one of the more robust types of blinds available. However, one fairly common issue relates to the stabalising chains that run from louvre to louvre attached to the weights at the bottom of the blinds. The chains keep the slats in line when they are being drawn or rotated. However, in high traffic commercial environments or home environments where the louvres bottoms are at floor level, and exposed to pets, this chain is vulnerable to breaking or coming away from the louvres due to wear and snagging. It is straight forward to clip the chain back on where this is the case. Or if the chain or the weight that it is connected to is damaged, these parts are very low cost to replace. If you are concerned about this issue, then you can select ‘sewn in’ weights, which do not have stabilising chain.

What are vertical louvre blinds?

A vertical louvre blind is a blind made up of a headrail onto which weighted 89mm or 127mm strips of fabric are hung. The louvres can be drawn to one side or can part in the middle stacking at either side - giving an uninterrupted view and access to the window or door. When drawn closed, the louvres can also be rotated to any angle to let in as much or as little light as desired. They are a great solution to balance natural light, glare control and privacy, especially at larger windows, patios and bi-fold doors.

What are vertical slat blinds called?

Louvred blinds with vertically oriented fabric slats are known as vertical window blinds. Because of their similarity in slatted design to Venetian blinds, but their louvres' orientation (from top to bottom), they are sometimes confusingly referred to by customers as "vertical Venetian blinds"

Are vertical blinds a good option for small UPVC windows?

Yes, vertical blinds can be a good option for small UPVC windows and large ones too. Vertical blinds are made up of a series of vertical slats that can be adjusted to control the amount of light that enters the room. They are also a good way to add privacy to a window. For smaller windows, we would recommend vertical blinds with 89mm louvres.

Are vertical blinds the best choice for conservatories?

Vertical blinds are a popular choice for conservatories because they can provide both privacy and variable light control. They are also relatively easy to clean and maintain. You can also cover a large span of your conservatory in a single blind, up to 5 metres in length. If you are looking for the same variable light control and privacy but prefer something which looks more discrete and integral to your conservatory, you may wish to consider perfect fit venetian blinds which can be clip fitted into the frame of each pane within your conservatory. They have wooden or aluminium slats which can be tilted open or closed for privacy and light control and are so easy to fit. Perfect fit conservatory blinds can be ordered made-to-measure from a reputable retailer.

How Do I Measure for Vertical Blinds on French Doors?

Measuring for vertical blinds is a simple process, if fitting inside the recess we require the tight wall-to-wall measurement of the width and drop - If fitting on the wall outside of the recess we need the overall finished width and drop that you require the finished blind to be. We are always happy to help with measure queries, please contact our customer service team who will be able to advise.

While vertical blinds are a popular choice, if fitting outside of the recess or you have space above the door another blind to consider are roller blinds for French doors. Roller blinds are available in many different colours and have the advantage of rolling up and out of the way of the doors.

Can I have Vertical Blinds that are motorised?

Yes, definitely! We offer manually operated or motorised Vertical blinds, they are popular for their functionality and style. Another blind you might want to consider is our motorised pleated blinds. These are great at insulating whilst filtering the light through to give a softer feel to your window dressing.

Can I get venetian blinds 250cm wide?

Yes, we can make Metal venetian blinds 250 cm wide. Unfortunately, the maximum with for Wooden Venetians is 240mm but the metal ones can be made up to 360cm wide
