Roof Lantern Blinds

Quite often roof lanterns are planned as part of a build or extension, without considering the amount of glare and heat that will enter the room as a result. Roof lantern blinds are a really effective way to prevent your room from becoming uncomfortably hot, or from minimising glare which may make watching TV or working near by unbearable.

Roof Lanterns come in all sizes - small squares, long and thin, or big expanses of glass. Finding a blind to cover your lantern can be tricky. Luckily, our roof lantern blinds cover most sizes easily.

Operation can also be an issue, for a blind which may be out of reach. Luckily we offer pleated skylight blinds which are motorised. Not only this, if you haven't planned to supply mains power to the roof lantern, then in addition to being powered from a 3-pin plug socket or a mains fused spur, our blinds can be powered by battery or by solar power.

Frequently Asked Questions about Roof Lantern Blinds

What is the difference between a roof lantern and a skylight?

Skylights, which are often referred to as roof lights, are fixed at an angle directly into the roof. Roof lanterns, tend to be fitted in a flat roof, and are made of several glass panels placed at an angle to form an apex. They are intended to give flat roofs more height and allow daylight into a room.

Do roof lanterns make the room cold?

There is always a chance that incorporating a large glass roof lantern structure in your ceiling will result in heat loss and frigid rooms throughout the winter when compared to a well-insulated ceiling. The issue can be reduced by specifying an energy-efficient glazing system and also by incorporating blinds into your lantern. Equally, this large expanse of glass can also encourage heat gain during summer. The same applies to energy-efficient glazing and using blinds as an insulating layer. In particular cellular pleated roof lantern window blinds are particularly effective at insulating to prevent heat gain or loss, as the double-layered fabric is made up of pockets of air which act as a better insulating layer than a single fabric sheet. Efficient glazing and blinds are excellent ways of making your roof lantern room or orangery appropriate for usage all year long!

Why should you get blinds for lantern roof?

Blinds for lantern roofs are an excellent way of regulating a room's temperature. In addition, they also aid in reducing glare, excluding light. They can also offer UV protection for your furnishings.

Can electric blinds be fitted to roof lanterns?

Yes, roof lanterns can be fitted with electric blinds. They are actually a great option for difficult-to-access roof lanterns that require covering for shade, light exclusion or temperature management. Electric blinds can be deployed across the glass expanse effortlessly with the push of a button, eliminating the need for a wand to wind the blind back and forth.

How do roof lantern electric blinds work?

There are two main types of roof lantern blinds. These are pleated roof lantern blinds and zip roller roof lantern electric blinds. For convenience, both are best operated using motors, which can be mains or battery-powered, with the option of a solar panel. Motorisation eliminates the need to operate with crank handles or operating poles. Pleated roof lantern window blinds are like standard cellular pleated blinds but they operate and deploy horizontally - stacking at one end of the window and drawing across to the opposite side. They are operated and held under tension using cables which run through the honeycomb structure of the fabric, fixed at the opposite end to a bottom rail. They are often complemented with an L-shaped aluminium frame onto which the blind sits. This acts to provide extra support to the blind and reduce any light ingress around the edges.

Zip blinds consist of a roller blind held in a cassette at one end of the blind, which is tensioned using springs concealed in a cassette at the opposite side of the recess. The roller blind fabric has one side of a zip welded to each edge of the fabric. This zip runs in special side channels which trap the zip and hold the fabric under tension preventing it from sagging over large expanses. This zip makes sure the blind opens and shuts smoothly and stops the cloth from being pushed out of the channels. Additionally, it ensures that the full glass pane is covered with minimal light seepage.
