What are the different types of Blackout Blind?

At Newblinds.co.uk, we have a range of blinds featuring blackout fabrics. We also have a selection of products with additional features such as head cassettes and side channels that limit light ingress even further, as explained below.

    Roller Blinds

Blackout Roller Blinds are perhaps the most popular form of blind used for light control. We have manual and electrically operated blinds available with blackout fabrics. On request, roller blinds can be provided with the option of a closed cassette and side channels to reduce incoming light even further.

    Blackout Loft blinds

Our excellent quality, own brand skylight blinds for VELUX, RoofLITE, FAKRO and DAKSTRA feature light-proof fabrics in a range of popular colourways. These also have fascia and side channels that serve to block out the light even further, making them extremely popular for those who have converted their loft space into an extra bedroom.

    Conservatory Black Out Blinds

Blinds can be used in conservatories to transform them into a temporary bedroom in warmer months. Many of our blinds types are suitable for conservatory sides. We also have the option of a free no-obligation, home consultation for those who have tricky, shaped roof windows or simply wish to receive expert advice.

    Pleated Black Out Blinds

Pleated blinds are available with cellular fabric. The lifting cords of the cellular pleated blinds, run through the honeycomb structure of the fabric meaning there are no visible holes in the fabric itself. Whilst standard 'zig zag' pleated blinds are available in black-out fabric, light does shine through these holes, so for a clean-looking, light-proof fabric, we would recommend selecting cellular fabrics.

    Electric Blackout Blinds

Many of the blinds in our automated blinds section can be purchased with blackout fabrics. Our motorised bedroom roller blinds in particular can be purchased on request with head cassettes, side channels and bottom profiles to enhance light exclusion. The performance of these blinds, in terms of their ability to limit light ingress, is suitable for most home and commercial installations.

    Zip Blinds

For those who need the ultimate in light control, we are also able to supply ZIP blinds, which comprise of roller blinds with blackout fabric, a head cassette and side channels. A 'zip' is welded to the edges of each side of the fabric. This zip is encapsulated by unique side channels. This combination of zipped fabric and side channels reduces the amount of light ingress and also retains the fabric within the side channels under impact or during changes in room pressure caused by opening and closing doors and windows or strong draughts. ZIP blinds are a popular choice for those who have home cinemas. ZIP blinds are also available as roof blinds for challenging, large atrium, sloping or skylight windows. They are available as a manually operated blind, or they can be motorised and controlled by radio handset, mobile app, AV or home automation system. Each ZIP blind is unique, so please contact us if you require further information or a quotation by emailing [email protected].

Frequently Asked Questions about Blackout Blinds

What are blackout blinds, and how do they work?

Blackout blinds are window coverings that are designed to block out light from entering a room. They are typically made of thick, opaque materials such as vinyl, fabric, or PVC, and sometimes have a special coating that reflects light and prevents heat from entering or escaping through your windows. For enhanced light exclusion, some blackout blinds feature cassetted headboxes, side channels and bottom profiles. Whereas for some blinds, blackout only refers to the fabric and where this is the case, there will be some degree of light ingress around the edges of the fabric.

What are the benefits of using blackout blinds?

The benefits of using blackout blinds include complete light control, improved privacy and increased energy efficiency. For those wishing to enjoy undisturbed sleep in the day time, or during the long daylight hours of summer, blackout blinds will help reduce light levels. Blackout blinds can also help reduce noise levels and protect furniture and fabrics from fading due to sunlight exposure. Blackout fabrics are also available in a vast range of colours and pattern designs, so there will be no shortage of inspiration for those wishing to add a splash of color to a design feature to their decor.

How long do blackout blinds last?

The lifespan of blackout blinds depends on several factors, including the type of blinds, the quality and structure of the materials used, the amount of use they receive, care taken during the operation, and the conditions in which they are installed. High-quality blackout blinds can last anywhere from 5 to 10 years with proper care and maintenance.

Does the color of blackout blinds matter?

The color of blackout blinds does not impact their ability to block out light or provide energy efficiency. If a fabric is genuinely blackout, then it will lot allow light to penetrate through the fabric itself, regardless of colour.

When should you use blackout blinds?

Blackout blinds are ideal for use in bedrooms, nurseries, home theatres, and any other space where a higher degree of light control and privacy are desired. They are also a popular choice for shift workers or anyone who needs to sleep during the day.

    Do blackout blinds attract heat?

Blackout blinds themselves do not attract heat, but they can absorb heat if they are made of certain materials or have a dark color. However, the reflective coating on many blackout blinds can actually help reduce heat buildup and improve energy efficiency.

Can blackout blinds help with energy efficiency and insulation?

Yes, blackout blinds can help improve energy efficiency and insulation by preventing heat from entering or escaping through your windows. This can lead to lower energy bills and a more comfortable living space.

What are the best ways to clean and maintain my blackout blinds to keep them looking new?

To clean and maintain your blackout blinds, simply dust them regularly with a soft cloth or duster. Some fabrics can be spot cleaned with a mild detergent and water solution as needed. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the fabric or coating on your blinds. Note: to ensure that you do not cause damage to your blind, you should always consult the manufacturer's care instructions before cleaning your blackout blind.

Can blinds be fitted to UPVC doors?

Yes, blinds can be fitted to UPVC doors or windows. However, the type of blind and the method of fitting will depend on the type of blind. For example, roller blinds can be fitted to UPVC doors using a variety of methods, including screw-mounting and clip-mounting. Clip mounting involves installing the blinds directly against the glass using brackets that fit into the window beading - this is available with brands such as Perfect Fit and INTU  If you are considering fitting blinds to an UPVC door, it is important to measure the door or window carefully and choose the right type of blind and mounting method.

How do I fit Velux blinds?

To fit Velux blackout blinds, you will need to find the window code on the VELUX window. Then, order the blinds using the correct size code; remove the old blind; clean the window frame and the area around it, secure the brackets to the window frame using the fixings provided (most Velux windows already have clip fix brackets for blinds); slide the blind onto the brackets, and adjust the blind to make sure it is level and secure.

    Do perfect-fit blinds damage windows?

No, perfect-fit blinds do not damage windows. To the contrary, they were designed to avoid the drilling and screwing that can cause damage to your window recess or the window itself. Perfect fit blinds are installed using clip brackets that slide under the window beading. The perfect fit frame simply clicks onto these brackets. This means that there is no need to drill or screw into the window frame, which can damage the wood or plastic.

Are plantation shutters for windows black out blinds?

Plantation shutters for windows can block out the vast majority of light, but may allow some light ingress between slats and around the edges. They are a good option for bedrooms, media rooms, and other areas where you want to keep out all the light. However, if you want to achieve 100% light exclusion then you may wish to consider a secondary product covering the recess itself, or an alternative light exclusion product rather than shutters.

What are the benefits of using skylight blackout blinds?

Skylight blackout blinds offer a number of benefits, including a greater degree of light exclusion, privacy, thermal insulation and glare reduction. If you are looking for a way to block out all light from your skylight, skylight blackout blinds are a great option. They offer a variety of benefits that can improve your comfort and save you money on your energy bills. They are even available with automated operation using wirefree battery operated motors, which can be charged with solar panels.

Are there blackout blinds without drilling holes?

Yes, there are blackout blinds without drilling holes available. These blinds are typically installed using a grip fit headrail or clip fix brackets, so there is no need to drill any holes in your window frame. No drill blackout blinds are a great option for people who want to add blackout blinds to their windows without damaging the window frame.

Can I get blinds extra wide?

Yes, we can custom make blinds extra wide, Roller blinds can be made up to 4mt wide with no fabric joins. We offer a variety of blackout fabrics to choose from, so you can find the perfect blinds to match your décor. Our blackout blinds are also made with a durable fabric that is resistant to fading and staining.

Can blackout blinds be used for an electric opening roof lantern?

Yes, Pleated blackout skylight blinds can be used for an electric opening roof lantern. This makes them a good choice for roof lanterns that are located in bedrooms or other areas where you want to block out light.
